Energy management and information systems (EMIS) are a class of building data analytics software that have shown significant potential for reducing energy waste, improving occupant comfort, and streamlining operations and maintenance (O&M) practices. Adoption of EMIS is rapidly increasing across a wide range of commercial property types, however the Department of Defense (DoD) presents particular implementation challenges related to funding, managing network security, and applying best practices for ongoing EMIS operation. Implementing EMIS with fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) software in just 10% of feasible DoD buildings is estimated to result in annual energy cost savings of $19 million, with an assumed average savings of $0.24 per square foot. Increased adoption of EMIS can be a key component in addressing DoD’s policies and long-term strategic goals around energy reduction, enhancing building controls, and performing energy assessments.
The 'EMIS Process Playbook' training video series has been developed to facilitate efficient EMIS implementation in the DoD, offering tailored guidance on quantifying the business case, navigating network security concerns, managing ongoing implementation processes and presenting real world case studies that highlight the benefits of EMIS at various installations. By categorizing different types of EMIS capabilities and configuration options, the training series allows DoD facility managers to tailor EMIS solutions to their operational goals and constraints.
