This session will aid you in assessing your building portfolio for EMIS. It begins with an introduction to EMIS and its benefits. We then discuss the key criteria to consider when determining which of your buildings may be candidates for EMIS, including some tools and methods for making this determination. Examples are also provided along the way.

Scott Hackel, PE, LEED AP, Vice President of Research, Slipstream 

Scott Hackel leads the Research + Innovation team in its mission to discover, test, and scale the strategies and technologies that impact climate and equity. As a veteran of the energy efficiency industry, he understands the challenges of unpacking climate solutions that benefit everyone. Scott hopes to further alignment of every part of Slipstream’s innovation work directly with climate and equity. Scott earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison as well as a graduate certificate in energy analysis and policy. He is an active member of both USGBC Wisconsin and ASHRAE, where he serves on the national Task Force for Building Decarbonization and other committees.

  • Describe Energy Management Information Systems (EMIS) are what functions they provide to building owners and operators;
  • Identify characteristics of a facility that is ready for EMIS implementation;
  • Determine what controls and IT requirements at DoD facilities that make them ready (or not ready) for EMIS;
  • Use the tools to filter your building stock for these elements.
