This ETL outlines an approach for determining the remaining operational capacity of stabilized soil-surfaced airfields. A proven technique for modeling the complex mechanical behavior of stabilized soils does not currently exist. The successful development of a stabilized soil performance model will require additional research, but a promising approach has been established. This guidance presents a method for evaluating stabilized soil-surfaced airfields in situ using a linear elastic modeling approach commonly used for rigid and flexible pavements. Portland cement stabilized soil airfields were evaluated to develop this approach and the applicability to other stabilization methods is not yet known. In this method, portable, lightweight strength measuring devices are used to evaluate the surface and sub grade, providing a rapid and easily deployable method for assessing the current condition of stabilized soil surfaced airfields.
