Managing Moisture in Building Enclosures

Education Type:
On-Demand
Duration:
2 Hours
Level:
Intermediate
Prerequisites:

None

Sponsored by RPM Building Solutions Group

Moisture management in building enclosures requires an understanding of the physical mechanisms that drive moisture flows and how to control these using appropriate strategies. Moisture problems compromise the durability of building enclosures, can lead to mold growth and cause unsightly staining of the facade. One of the most important measures for effective moisture management is a continuous air barrier system. This course begins with an explanation of moisture management concepts, followed by a review of effective strategies. Then special considerations for hot humid climates are highlighted, followed by air barrier systems in buildings. Successful completion of this course assumes that participants possess a suitable entry level of knowledge about building design and construction. Technical education in architecture, engineering, construction, and/or related industry experience is generally considered sufficient to successfully engage this course.

Learning Objectives

Upon completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the basic moisture concepts and fundamental physical phenomena governing moisture flows in building enclosures;
  • Identify the key strategies employed to deliver effective moisture management;
  • Gain awareness of special considerations for moisture management in hot, humid climates;
  • Select effective air barrier materials and understand how their vapor permeability influences suitable locations within enclosure assemblies;
  • Specify the need for continuity of the air barrier system and compatibility among the constituent materials; and
  • Locate additional sources of information about moisture management in order to apply to a project.
