This workshop focuses on how to assess opportunities for distributed energy resources (DERs) at the portfolio and site level to achieve decarbonization goals. Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) experts will discuss relevant data for site prioritization and highlight the Renewable Energy Integration and Optimization (REopt) energy and emissions modeling capabilities to help agencies identify the most cost-effective DERs to support decarbonization planning and implementation. The workshop will also include an overview & demo of the tool, hands-on exercise, and discussion to empower agencies to use REopt to assess DERs towards federal decarbonization targets.
Kathleen Krah, Research Engineer, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Read Bio
Kathleen Krah is a research engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Her work centers around NREL's REopt tool, a techno-economic optimization tool for distributed energy systems. Kathleen leads techno-economic analysis projects to support domestic and international communities, government agencies, and other public- and private-sector organizations seeking to cost-optimally achieve their energy goals - including decarbonization, resilience, and cost-savings priorities. Additionally, she contributes to REopt tool development, with a focus on expanding emissions and renewable energy modeling capabilities, and now leads the REopt team at the program level. Kathleen holds an MEngSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering from University College Cork (Ireland) and a BS in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the University of Notre Dame.
Amanda Farthing, Research Engineer, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Read Bio
Amanda Farthing is a research engineer in the Accelerated Deployment and Decision Support Center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. She specializes in techno-economic modeling of distributed energy resources (DERs). At NREL, she develops and utilizes REopt, a modeling platform for DERs, to support federal agencies, international organizations, communities, and others in achieving their energy, resilience, decarbonization, and financial goals.
Nichole Liebov, Program Manager, Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) Read Bio
Nichole Liebov is a program manager at DOE FEMP leading the distributed energy and energy procurement program. A scientist by training, she works to support federal agencies with the development and implementation of on-site projects (e.g., solar PV, battery storage, wind) as well as off-site clean electricity procurement.
Upon completion of this workshop, attendees will be able to:
- Identify technical and economic drivers of DER investment decisions;
- Describe REopt modeling tool capabilities, particularly related to decarbonization goals;
- Perform REopt web tool analysis evaluating DER investments; and
- Recognize available FEMP distributed energy and energy procurement resources and technical assistance offerings.
