Five years ago a movement focused exclusively on optimizing the operations and functionality of laboratories began to gain momentum. This movement seeks to address laboratory buildings holistically, focusing on working with scientists to take concrete steps towards reducing energy, water, waste, and the use of hazardous materials. This movement has continued to grow and there are now over 100 organizations across the United States with Green Labs program to not only conserve resources, but also provide a unique opportunity to engage with scientists, strengthening relationships among facilities, safety and sustainability staff, and scientists.
Green Lab Certification is often a cornerstone of Green Lab programs. Over 400 labs in North America have been certified and that number is increasing rapidly due to the growing awareness of the importance of laboratories and optimized operations.
This presentation will discuss how Green Labs programs are formed and will suggest several opportunities for energy, water and waste reduction in labs. Green Lab Certification will also be addressed. This presentation is the first of two in a series.

Allison Paradise is the Founder and CEO of My Green Lab. Under her leadership, My Green Lab has established itself as a pioneer in laboratory sustainability. The organization developed the first nationally recognized standard for laboratory operations, established the first ENERGY STAR category for laboratory equipment, and recently released the first eco–label for laboratory products. As CEO, Allison regularly speaks at industry meetings and scientific conferences. She holds degrees in neuroscience from Brown and Harvard.
