Specifiers' Properties Templates

About the Property Templates

To ensure reliable information transfer among those using BIM systems, and BIM-derived data sets such as the Construction Operations Building Information Exchange, a minimum description of the content of BIM models should be agreed upon. An example of the kinds of properties needed may be found here.

To reduce the effort on individual project teams and ensure that owners do not impose conflicting property set requirements, the buildingSMART alliance™ is helping to coordinate a project called the Specifier's Properties Information Exchange. The first product of this project is the WBDG productguide™ templates.

The templates provide a working draft of the types of decisions made by specifiers in across all specification sections. These templates may be thought of as the choices made by specifiers as they identify the required quality of materials, products, assemblies, and systems identified in the specifications. Professional specifiers may consider even the property templates to an outline spec.

Finding Properties of Interest

The property sets are published in two formats. The first format is a PDF file containing of the sequential listing of property sets submitted to buildingSMART alliance by the Specifications Consultants in Independent Practice (SCIP).

The second way you may search the properties is through an online search page. On the search page you may use one of the following indexes: Masterformat section number, property name, or property value. Searching by Masterformat section number displays the subset of the information listed in the SCIP PDF file. Searching by property name displays each of the Masterformat sections that require the use of that property. Searching by value displays the list of all properties where the value may be found.

Feedback

The templates are the starting point for the creation of national standards for the identification of material, product, assembly, and system properties in Building Information Models. All of us involved in the project would like your feedback on the property templates.
