Code Taxonomy

Updated:
01-10-2024

Building and construction codes address multiple issues important in the design, construction and operations of buildings. In addition to state and local building departments, these issues are also addressed by numerous agencies at the federal, state and local level. In order to expand the understanding of codes and standards, facilitate education and training, and promote the efficient administration of codes and standards the National Council of Governments on Building Codes and Standards (NCGBCS) has developed the below taxonomy to identify the topics covered in code, the related state and local agencies, relevant standards and model codes, and other available guidance.
