This workshop introduces procedures to safely and cost-effectively perform effective operations and maintenance (O&M) for photovoltaic (PV) systems and covers PV system inspection, operations, preventative and corrective maintenance, O&M plans, safety and budgeting. It also includes a hands-on exercise in spotting defective modules.


Andy Walker, Principal Engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory   

Andy Walker has been focusing on performance issues since 2009 and helping system owners evaluate and optimize system performance. He is currently managing a U.S. Department of Energy SunShot program on photovoltaics (PV) operations and maintainance (O&M) producing a best practices guide () and a PV O&M cost model. Andy has also provided content for two online Federal Energy Management Program O&M trainings. Andy’s credentials include a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering; he is a registered professional engineer in the State of Colorado.

  • Understand the current state of O&M costs and outcomes;
  • Consider safety in PV O&M activities;
  • Identify any deficiencies in the products or installation;
  • Prepare O&M plans and budget and;
  • Ensure plant performs as expected.
