The 2016 Guiding Principles (GP) for Sustainable Federal Buildings Workshop will provide detailed
guidance on the six individual Guiding Principles for both New Construction and Modernization for Existing Buildings.

The workshop will identify recommended evidence of compliance for measuring and reporting on site-level progress. The workshop will also identify and discuss related USGBC LEED credits for new construction.

Michael Myers, Nationally known speaker  

Michael Myers is a nationally known speaker and has been at the forefront of energy efficiency, green building, and sustainability for more than 30 years. He has worked for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Lockheed Martin, the cities of Austin, San Antonio, and New York. At DOE, he was the program manager for the Existing Buildings Energy Efficiency Research and Affordable Housing programs and led national efforts to promote local green building initiatives. At Lockheed Martin, he assisted local governments to reduce their energy consumption and led corporate efforts to develop a green building policy for all new facilities and building renovations. At the City of Austin, Michael managed the award-winning electric and gas demand-side management programs for all customer sectors. He led the effort that created the first green building program in the nation, the City of Austin's acclaimed Green Building Program, which received international honors at the U.N Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and serves as the basis for the national green building movement. Michael currently provides support to the Federal Energy Management Program to help federal agencies comply with the 2016 Guiding Principles for Federal Sustainable Buildings.

Upon completion of this workshop, students will understand:

  • The broad GP policy and reporting framework;
  • The elements and sub-elements of each GP metric;
  • The GP's relationship to third-party certifications and standards such as LEED, Green Globes, and ASHRAE Standard 189.1;
  • Documentation examples and strategies to achieve the GP and;
  • Best practices and lessons learned.
