Advanced Electric Metering in Federal Facilities provides Federal energy and facility managers with the knowledge and skills to take full advantage of the benefits of advanced electric metering systems. This course discusses the components of an advanced electric metering system that meet Federal requirements and help sites take full advantage of metered data. Emphasis is placed on the data analysis, including selecting the appropriate software tools and conducting analyses that achieve quantifiable results.

Instructor

Ab Ream, Former Energy Technology Program Specialist, U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP)   

Mr. Reams's program specialties cover operations and maintenance, energy audits, training, metering, commissioning, and measurement and verification. Prior to joining FEMP, Mr. Ream was the Facilities Energy Program Manager for the U.S. Coast Guard. He holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a master's degree in technology management from the University of Maryland.

Learning Objectives

Develop the skills to take full advantage of advanced electric metering by learning to:

  • Select the most appropriate advanced electric metering system at the building, circuit, panel, or end use level;
  • Evaluate and select data analysis tools from in-house-developed spreadsheets to commercially available software packages;
  • Plan for new or additional advanced electric metering that enables the facility to improve energy efficiency and operations;
  • Ensure that the current metered data is processed and interpreted in a way to facilitate targeted decisions and take action; and
  • Use demand profiles and other graphical displays to make decisions that will reduce electricity demand and save on utility bills.
